Collection of Josef Liebeskind

The vast amount of music manuscripts of the German musicologist Josef Liebeskind (1866 - 1916) was collected in the act of his activities as a researcher and an editor. As a pioneer in the research of Gluck Josef Liebeskind prepared many editions of the works of Christoph Willibald Gluck (1714 - 1787); furthermore Liebeskind also endeavoured in a great mount of work fort he compositions of Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (1739 - 1799). Both composers build up the main part of the collection of Josef Liebeskind. This collection contains 449 items, which are present in 132 manuscripts and manuscript collections. Among them there are 3 autographs of Carl Ditters von Dittersdorf (Sonatas for piano for 4 hands Jason qui enlève la toison d'or, Hércule changé en Dieu, Ajax et Ulisse qui se disputent les armes d'Achille; MLHs 78/1-3). The greater part of the collection Liebeskind contains copies by the collector himself, which Liebeskind manufactured in different European libraries to serve as references for his diverse editions. This part of the collection can be dated as coming from the late 19th century resp. the early 20th century. While discussing the topic of the reception of Gluck at that specific time, this part of the collection can be seen as the most prominent documentation of sources worldwide. Furthermore the collection distinguishes itself so far, that Liebeskind made arrangements of the works next to the archival registration and therefore continued the arrangements of the works of Gluck initialized by Richard Wagner and Richard Strauss.
